In the tent there was hot chocolate (sponsored by Timmies)
and hot dogs (sponsored by Maple Leaf Canada).
Thank you everyone that helped pull this project together.
A special thanks to the elves who dressed up and walked the parade route.

Wow what a party! The Autumn Gala went ahead with great success.
The ladies came out to party hardy and really did have a good time.
My congratulations Cheryl Card and her “Team Gala” on a job very well done.
All of the planning meetings and double checking on every aspect of the Gala were well worth the effort as it produced a fine event. It just shows that this club is very powerful when we all work together. We can accomplish so much as a group.
Once again congratulations to “Team Gala” on your success.

Issue 76 - October 16, 2014 (view in pdf by clicking on the issue number)
Message from Past President Brent
Thank you everyone for a great year. I have enjoyed being President and am proud to support Dave in the upcoming year. A president is only as successful as its members, and I am confident this will be a very successful year.
President’s Welcome
I would like to welcome all members of the Hub City Optimist Club back for another year of service to the youth of Saskatoon. I am very honoured to be the President of the HCO for the 2014/2015 year.
It will go by very quickly as we have many things to accomplish this year.
Thank you to Brent Card for his capable leadership for the past two years. The Club is in good shape and we can look forward to growth and greater service to the youth in our community in the future. We have just added four new members in the month of October. That doesn’t mean that we stop recruiting new members! Each optimist member has a positive effect on up to 46 children in the community. A good example would be our mentorship program with Sutherland School.
We have a positive effect on over 300 children.
This is my 15th year as an Optimist Club Member. I hope you will share my pride in the power of our club to get things accomplished. Over the past 15 years I have seen the Hub City Optimist Club accomplish many good things for Saskatoon’s youth and for ourselves. It takes the effort of all of us to make things happen so, I invite all of you to participate with me in fellowship and service to Saskatoon’s youth.
2017 will be the 25th anniversary of the Hub City Optimist Club and one of the things we need to get started with is our anniversary celebration. We will celebrate the commitment of all of our members, present and past that have worked together to make a very powerful positive contribution to the Saskatoon Community.
If you have questions about the club or need help with any club related project please call me and we can obtain answers as quickly as possible.

BINGOS
First and foremost A HUGE thank you to Bonnie W. whom has been coordinating bingos for many years. Our club used to work all the bingos, but as time went on we’ve left it to Bonnie to find people to work the bingos. She has done an amazing job!
Money brought in from bingos is a very large part of our “in-kind” donations. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to help as many of the youth of Saskatchewan as we do.
Bingo money also funds our Secret Santa each year.
As you can see, bingos are a very large part of our fund raising.
It’s time we stepped up to the plate and do our part volunteering for bingos.
Each issue of Goods And Goodies shows about two months of bingos. This gives people lots of time to plan to come out. Let Bonnie W. or Brent C. know or reply to this e-mail.
If everyone works a couple of bingos the rewards are HUGE! Pick yours today!
Bonnie W. is there the whole time and makes working bingos fun and easy.
Tuesday, August 5th (6 pm - midnight).
Saturday, August 9th (6 pm - midnight & midnight - 3 am).
Tuesday, September 9th (6 pm - midnight).
Saturday, September 27th (6 pm - midnight & midnight - 3 am).
Pick a shift to volunteer for a bingo OR get some people together and ALL OF YOU work that shift. It takes 6 people. You’ll need to be there 30 minutes prior to the bingo for briefing and to start selling cards.
Just give us at least one week’s notice.

CAMP CIRCLE O’ FRIENDS
Saturday, June 21st Road Trip
Contact: Brent C.
The camp is very well organized. We were given a tour of the camp that was really something to see. There were 10 stations for the kids. Some stations were; The Road Apple Gang (petting zoo with horseback riding), Shenanigans (Irish theme), Beach Station (featuring wake boards for kids), variety night station and media station.
The 1st night is a bon fire with hamburgers, hot dogs and s’mores
sponsored by Regina Progressive Club.
Each camp house takes a turn doing dishes. As they say “There are no free meals”, so we were put to work sweeping. The food was great.
The cheesecake at lunch was yummy.
We had a ball at the jello eating contest (Just ask Jim D.).
Kryssy adopted a puppy and called it Hope. Perfect name.
This year’s theme was Irish. The counselors took turns dressing up as a leprechaun popping up in different places throughout the camp.
Variety night was fantastic! When it was over we presented each camper with a medallion. The smile on their faces made the trip worthwhile right there.
There are no pictures of the kids at the request of the camp (privacy/respect).
Thank you Gayle for the wonderful hospitality.
Camp Circle ‘O Friends lives “Bringing out the best in kids”.

“Well! We’re a group of volunteers who work in our communities to Bring Out The Best in Kids. Saturday, June 21st Road Trip

This is a camp for kids with cancer. There is no charge to the family so the camp depends on
the generosity of donations. It’s a great chance for the kids to get away and BE a kid, and the family
to get a much needed break. There is a top notch medical team on board and several counselors.
We have outfitted a room with furniture and continue to offer support, mostly in-kind. The office
administrator Gayle was the guest speaker (with a power point of pictures) at last year’s
Ladies Autumn Gala. Yes, tears and applause all around.
This year the camp is having variety night with the theme “Everyone is a star”. We are going to
variety night and giving ALL campers a star medallion inscribed on the back “Everyone is a Star.
Camp Circle O’ Friends 2014”. They are hung from a lanyard that says “Hub City Optimist Club”.
This is a road trip to the camp. Car pools are being created. Map with directions are an attachment.
Everyone is encouraged to come out and bring a friend.
This promises to be a lot of fun! Now that’s “Bringing out the best in kids”.

Summer is when our food services operate.
It provides a huge amount of the fundraising.
In fall, we have the Ladies Autumn Gala.
In winter, we sell 50-50 tickets at the Blades home games.
Plus, we work bingos throughout the year.
It takes everyone to make the events run both smoothly and successfully.
They are absolutely loads of fun to work!
At the end of the day, you can walk away smiling with pride knowing that
YOU were an important part in making our events a success and that
YOU helped the youth of Saskatchewan.
Find the events you can work and get a hold of the contact,

GOODY FOR GOODIES
Crockpot Barbecue Pork Sandwiches
2 onions -- sliced
4 pounds pork roast -- or 5 lbs
6 whole cloves
2 cups water
16 ounces barbecue sauce -- bottled
1 large onion -- chopped
Put half the sliced onions on the bottom of the crockpot. Place meat on top, along with cloves (which I put in a cheesecloth bag) and rest of sliced onions.
Add water, cover, and cook overnight or 8 to 12 hours on low.
Remove meat. Drain liquid from crockpot and discard. Remove bone and fat from meat.
Shred meat and put back in the crockpot.
Add chopped onion and barbecue sauce. (I always add MORE barbecue sauce. It tends to be rather dry with just the 16 ounces!)
Cover and cook another 1 to 3 hours on high or 4 to 8 hours on low, stirring two or three times.
Serve from crock pot on large buns!
To poke a wood fire is more solid enjoyment than almost anything else in the world.
